The waves of displaced Rohingya who are stranded in the waters around the coast of Aceh, often experience tragic situations, namely the potential for accidents at sea. The potential disaster risk could be in the form of the sinking of the ship they are traveling on, thus requiring assistance and/or assistance for search and rescue actions.
So far, Aceh fishermen have carried out various rescues that they can provide for refugees who need help at sea. However, they previously did not have a special institution to carry out SAR tasks. Therefore, through a forum called Duek Pakat Panglima Laot, which was held thanks to the collaboration between the Geutanyoe Foundation and the Panglima Laot Aceh institution, there has resulted in agreements and decisions for the establishment of the Panglima Laot Aceh SAR unit.
The Panglima Laot Aceh SAR Unit has so far carried out basic skills training and operational standards in search and rescue work at sea. However, institutionally, the Panglima Laot Aceh SAR unit does not yet have a defined management and operational structure to be able to carry out its functions effectively immediately. Therefore, the Geutanyoe Foundation, which has been involved from the start in assisting the formation of the Panglima Laot Aceh SAR unit, will provide assistance and/or technical support for the SAR unit in establishing its structure and validating it.
