The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, held an Iftar Ramadhan Programme for 700 members of the Rohingya community in Malaysia, coordinated by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Malaysia. The event, which is jointly coordinated by HUMANiTi Malaysia and Geutanyoë Malaysia, held at Masjid Ibnu Mas’ud, Jalan Damai, Kuala Lumpur today.
“The Foundation has donated humanitarian assistance worth RM4.2million to alleviate the suffering of Rohingya refugees in Malaysia. The humanitarian assistance was launched in 2016, and four stages of donation have been implemented. To date, more than 6,000 Rohingya families have benefited from the donations,” said His Excellency Khalid Ghanim Al-Gaith, the UAE Ambassador to Malaysia. The humanitarian assistance was in the form of food baskets and basic necessities, supervised by UAE Embassy in Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with local and Rohingya NGOs.
“The Iftar event expresses the holy month of Ramadhan’s spirit of charity, generosity and compassion, and supports the Government of Malaysia’s strong commitment to assist the stateless Rohingya community in Malaysia,” said Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar, former OIC Special Envoy for Myanmar. He extended his appreciation to the foundation for the iftar.
“The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance will increase if inter-communal tensions continue especially in Myanmar. Rohingya in particular still face severe restrictions on their freedom of movement and in their access to livelihoods. HUMANiTi Malaysia together with Geutanyoë Malaysia are looking forward to collaborate with UAE charitable organizations to ensure refugees continue to get humanitarian assistance including medical and education,” said Ahmad Tarmizi Mukhtar, Secretary General of HUMANiTi Malaysia.
The iftar event also brought together representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister’s Department, other NGOs and various private entities who have come forward to support.
